Sigrid Helliesen Lund was a board member of the Nansen Relief organization for refugees and stateless persons in Oslo. A trained singer and pacifist, she was also active in the International Women’s League for Peace and Freedom, and various aid groups.
In 1939 Sigrid H. Lund accompanied 37 Jewish children from Bratislava and Prague to then-unoccupied Norway; Berthold Grünfeld and Edgar Brichta were among the group.
When German troops invaded Norway in April 1940, Jews were no longer safe there either. Through her contacts to the resistance, Lund was able to warn numerous people of imminent arrests and arrange hiding places. She also took clothing and medication to Bredtveit prison in Oslo on several occasions.
At the end of 1942, she organized the rescue of 14 children from the Jewish children’s home in Oslo, along with Nic Waal and Nina Hasvoll.
Like several other Nansen Relief staff, Sigrid Helliesen Lund had to flee to Sweden in February 1944. She continued her aid work from there.
