Cynthia Wevers in Aalten, 1945.

The Wevers family from Aalten (Netherlands) took Yitzack and Lena Jedwab into their home in June 1944. The Jedwabs had been living in a series of hiding places since October 1942. They were put in touch by Jan Wikkerink, who was active in the resistance. The Wevers did not want to take in the Jedwabs initially, since there were already evacuees staying in the house. A pastor from the reformed church changed the devout Calvinists’ minds by preaching that people must help those suffering persecution.
Cynthia Wevers tried to cook kosher food for her Jewish guests whenever she could, and the families spent time together. Lena and Yitzack Jedwab had to give away their son shortly after his birth to avoid being discovered. Baby Willem lived with the Wikkerink family, who claimed he was a foundling. Mrs Wikkerink regularly visited the Wevers with Willem or pushed him past the house in his baby carriage so his parents could see him. After their liberation in March 1945, the family was reunited.
