Hysref Frashëri, 1940.

Hysref Frashëri and his wife Emine were members of an Albanian aristocratic family. The Muslim couple lived with their four children Lili, Neriman, Didi, and Mehmet near Kamza, outside Tirana. In April 1944 the Jewish woman Sida Levi asked the Frashëris to hide some acquaintances of hers. The family took in Sabetay and Miriam Gershon along with their two daughters, and hid them on their estate. Later, they also hid Josef Gertler, who had fled from Romania.
In August 1944 German soldiers searched all the buildings on the Frashëris’ estate, after German soldiers were shot at nearby. They did not discover the people in hiding. Fearing more raids, the Frashëris found new places for them to hide in the area around Tirana. Mehmet Frashëri continued to provide them with food.
After Albania’s liberation in November 1944, the rescued Jews stayed in touch with the Frashëri family. Hysref Frashëri was honored by the Israeli Holocaust memorial center Yad Vashem as Righteous Among the Nations in the year 2000.
