Fatima Veseli

Fatima Veseli, Refik Veseli’s mother, with dried tobacco hanging from her house in Kruja, 1943.

Fatima Veseli lived in the Albanian mountain village of Kruja with her husband Vesel. In 1943 their son Refik asked her to take in four Jewish refugees from Yugoslavia to hide them from the German occupiers. She agreed, and Moshe Mandil, his wife Gabriela, and their two children Gavra and Irena lived with the Veselis for nine months until Albania’s liberation. Later, her oldest son Hamid brought Joseph Ben-Josef, his wife Ruzhica, and his sister Finiza to stay with them. The five adults stayed in the house during the day and only left it at night, while Gavra and Irena Mandil mingled with the village children. All of them survived until Albania was liberated. The contact to the Ben-Josef family was lost after their return to Yugoslavia, but the Veselis remained friendly with the Mandil family. In 1987 Moshe Mandil arranged for Fatima Veseli, her husband Vesel, and their son Refik to be honored as Righteous Among the Nations.
