Public health officer Giuseppe Moreali, Nonantola, 1930s.

Guiseppe Moreali was the public health officer for the small northern Italian town of Nonantola. A country house there, Villa Emma, offered refuge for more than 70 Jewish children and young people from Germany, Austria, and Yugoslavia. Jewish aid organizations ran the accommodation and looked after the children. Guiseppe Moreali was in charge of medical care.
After Italy was occupied by German troops in September 1943, the children and young people were once again in danger. Guiseppe Moreali decided to help. Along with the priest Arrigo Beccari, he sought safe hiding places for the group. Within a very short time, the children were able to hide in the monastery’s seminar rooms and with families in and around Nonantola. Guiseppe Moreali was also involved in obtaining forged identity papers. Almost all of the children were rescued.
The Israeli Holocaust memorial center Yad Vashem honored Guiseppe Moreali as Righteous Among the Nations in 1964.
