Many of those in hiding had to change their quarters often because people in their neighborhood grew suspicious or because helpers feared being discovered. Marie Jalowicz of Berlin went underground on June 22, 1942, and stayed in at least thirteen different apartments. She was taken in by friends as well as by people she did not know at all. In 1943 she fled together with a Bulgarian acquaintance and headed for Turkey. She was denounced and arrested, however, in Tarnovo, Bulgaria. A German public servant helped her by procuring forged documents. She returned to Berlin and again went into hiding.
