Moni Kario lived in Skopje with his wife Rachel and their two children Rachamim (born 1931) and Rina (born 1936). In March 1943 their friends the Popstefanovs warned him that all Jews from Skopje were to be registered and then deported. The Karios decided to flee to Albania. Kario contacted an employee of the Albanian consulate in Skopje. In return for payment, the Albanian was to take the family out of the city to the Albanian border. The plan failed.
During the raids in Skopje on March 11, 1943, the family hid in the vineyards. They later found shelter with the Popstefanovs and the Serchadjievs. After around a week, Moni Kario and his family were able to leave Skopje in secret. They successfully crossed the Albanian border and continued to Tirana. A number of Albanians supported them on the way. The Karios had obtained forged identity papers and posed as a Muslim family. They experienced the end of the war in Tirana. The family emigrated to Israel in 1948.
