Helping the Persecuted

Jews throughout Europe tried to escape from deportation and murder, which made them dependent on many kinds of support. Few people dared to help them. Some of the helpers took the initiative and offered assistance to those facing persecution. Others were specifically asked. They helped Jewish acquaintances and friends, but also strangers. Helpers sometimes formed networks, which made larger relief operations possible. Individuals in hiding required active support from up to ten or even more helpers.

Helpers had to continuously take into consideration the peril and consequences of offering assistance. Some of them risked their life to help others. Only some of the assistance to those in hiding was successful, however. Many people in hiding were discovered and deported.
