Everywhere in German-controlled Europe, there were Jews who decided to escape the Nazi terror and evade deportations and mass shootings. To attempt an escape, they needed an opportunity to flee, forged documents, hiding places, and food, which in turn meant they had to rely on the help of others. Escaping to other cities and countries, and living with forged ID papers or in hiding places that were often only makeshift was dangerous, as was obtaining food on the black market. People in hiding were often denounced or tracked down and deported to extermination camps or shot on the spot. Their helpers were also often punished severely.
